Approval for the brand-name drug is now granted by the FDA and the company has agreed to pay US$1.2 billion to resolve allegations that it engaged in “malpractice, unfair business and misleading advertising.”

In November 2010, the FDA rejected two applications from patients to prescribe a generic version of Crestor. After numerous failed attempts to obtain the FDA’s approval, an attempt by AstraZeneca to get the generic version of Crestor approved again failed. The company, however, was successful in obtaining a second approval.
In August 2011, the FDA approved a generic version of Lipitor to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease and strokes. In December 2011, AstraZeneca and two other pharmaceutical companies filed a lawsuit against the three pharmaceutical companies for allegedly engaging in unfair and deceptive trade dress advertising that promoted a dangerous product, leading to Crestor’s recall.
